BBM is helping make your messages a little more private

Timed messaging and the ability to “unsend” messages have just been added to BBM, following in the footsteps of chat apps like WeChat and Snapchat who offer the same features.

“Privacy and control. At BBM, we recognize that these two ideas are more important today than ever before for users of IM apps,” BBM says in a blog post. “We believe that when people can chat and share with privacy and control, they are able to communicate with more discretion and freedom.”

BBM’s ephemeral messaging feature, called “Timed Messages”, allows you to time how long a friend can view a text or photo you’ve sent them in a one-on-one chat. You can set the timer between 1 and 15 seconds, after which, the message will self destruct.

To set the timer, tap on the timer icon next to the text bar and choose a length of time you want your friend to be able to view that message. Your friend won’t be able to see the message until they tap on the icon to view it. Wondering about screenshots? You can’t stop anyone from taking one, but BBM will notify you when a screenshot of the timed message has been taken.

The unsend message feature, called “Message Retraction”, lets you retract text messages by tapping and holding on the message and selecting ‘retract message’ from the menu.

Times Messages and Message Retraction are available in a limited beta for Android and BlackBerry 10 and will be made official on the upcoming 2.5 version for Android, iOS and BB 10 soon.
