City of Cape Town launches all-in-one transport app

Yesterday, the City of Cape Town launched an all-in-one transport app that depicts rail as well as local and tourist buses routes and stops. It can also be used to plan journeys and report faults and complaints to the city.

The Transport for Cape Town (TCT) app makes the city the first in Africa to launch an app that features most transport modes (except for min-bus taxis and cabs) in one app.

The TCT app covers Metrorail, the MyCiTi bus service, the Golden Arrow bus service, the University of Cape Town’s Jammie Shuttle and the City Sightseeing tour buses.

Private vehicle owners can also use the app to plan their routes in and around Cape Town.

The TCT app will tell you which mode of transport (either rail, bus or both) you can hop on to get to your destination and present a list of options of the various transport service operators in your vicinity.

You’ll also be able to see where you can find the closest and most convenient stops and stations, the distance to the stop or station, how to get there, the departure and arrival times, the estimated cost for the entire journey, and the estimated duration of the journey, including the time it will take to walk to a station or stop.

“Furthermore, the app will inform you of useful places along the way such as accommodation, restaurants, shopping malls, schools, hospitals, fuelling stations and police stations. It can find places of interest close to you and keep you informed of these en route. Once residents get the hang of it, they will not only use the app to move around the city, but also to explore their city,” said  councillor Brett Herron of the TCT Mayoral Committee.

The TCT fault reporting function will allow you to report transport-related matters such as potholes, faulty traffic lights, flooding, accidents and bad driver behaviour, along with the fault’s location via GPS and a photo, directly to the City.

You’ll also be notified of any bus and train delays, service interruptions, accidents, roadworks, road closures and other transport-related delays.

The TCT app will be available for iOS, Windows Phone, Android and BlackBerry in the next day or so from the various app stores.
