Samsung donates 3 000 smartphones to help UN ebola project

Samsung has announced that it will be handing over 3 000 Galaxy S3 Neo smartphones to the UN to help fight ebola.

The smartphones, altogether worth about $1 million (around R11 milion), will be donated through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs (OCHA) and will be used in the Humanitarian Connectivity Project, the UN’s IT project that uses mobiles to provide humanitarian support in disaster areas.

The Samsung smartphones will be distributed across  60 medical clinics located in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the worst hit countries in West Africa where the Humanitarian Connectivity Project is currently operating.

Each Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo comes pre-installed with the UN’s Smart Health Pro mobile app, which medical staff can use collect medical data. Quarantined patients will alo be able to use the smartphones to contact their family or friends from where they are being treated.

To avoid the possible spread of ebola outside of the medical clinics, all 3 000 of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Neos will be destroyed once the virus outbreak has subsided, according to Samsung.
