Screenshot capture only coming to Xbox One next year

The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has told IGN in an interview that screenshot capture functionality won’t be coming to the Xbox One this year. He says he jokes with the Xbox team, saying “We can do video, how hard can it be to just grab a frame of the video?”, but he added that apparently it’s more technically challenging than he thought.

Talking about the team, he said “Two weeks ago, they think they found a good solution for screenshots. They’re working on it. They know people want it. The team has a path to getting it done, and now it’s just prioritising.”

He says the December update will be small compared to others, and that the team will “pause for a little bit” over the holiday period and tackle the challenge of adding screenshot capture to the Xbox One in 2015.

Until then, the only way to save screenshots from your Xbox One gaming will remain a dedicated PC or Mac with a video capture card hooked up to the console.

Comparatively,  the PlayStation 4 has had the ability to capture screenshots and video from day one.

Microsoft has shown considerable commitment to the Xbox One in the last year, releasing monthly updates that have tweaked the dashboard and even added new functionality like the October update’s DLNA support. Sony, meanwhile, has released far fewer updates, with the latest version 2.0 firmware coming at a date that’s anyone’s guess at this point.
