500 Nexus 7s en route to help fight ebola

The nations affected by ebola infections need all the help they can get to fight the further spread of the deadliest outbreak of ebola in recent years, so it’s for that reason that non-profit organisation Inveneo will be distributing 500 Google Nexus 7 tablets to major aid agencies working on the ground in affected areas.

The tablets will be pre-loaded with crisis-response apps, and senior field engineer Samuel Perales along with executive director Bruce Baikie will be giving teams in Ghana Tablets for Ebola Responders training.

“International relief organizations have been expressing the need for tablets on the ground. Having seen first-hand just how effective these tablets were in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan last year in the Philippines, we are particularly eager to get tablets into the hands of aid organizations working to eradicate Ebola,” explains Perales.

The software that will accompany the tablets has been designed to enable post-crisis communication and coordination.

“With programs like street-level maps and access to medical information, tablets become powerful ICT tools in the fight against Ebola. Aid workers will be able to deliver medical supplies more quickly and will receive updates and news stories that rural communities desperately need,” Inveneo said in a media statement.

Samsung has also been supporting the efforts to eradicate ebola. Recently the Korean technology giant said that it will be handing over 3 000 Galaxy S3 Neo smartphones to the UN to help fight the virus.

The smartphones, altogether worth about $1 million (around R11 milion), will be donated through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs (OCHA) and will be used in the Humanitarian Connectivity Project, the UN’s IT project that uses mobiles to provide humanitarian support in disaster areas.
