Code4CT looking to crowdfund girls’ holiday coding programme

In July this year, 25 girls from Khayelitsha township in Cape Town took the first step in what is hoped will become careers in tech. They took part in a special series of workshops aimed at teaching them how to code at the Code4CT holiday programme hosted by Innovate South Africa

Preparations are already in place for next year’s programme and Code4CT needs your help to make it happen.

Code4CT has launched a campaign on local crowdfunding site Thundafund to raise money to cover costs as it hopes to host three Code4CT sessions in 2015.

The programme aims to show girls that coding and IT are not a boys-only field. They are taught web building skills and create websites for real clients to tackle social challenges.

Code4CT has has a good impact on the girls who passed through the programme in July with 71% of the participants stating they were inspired to pursue a career in computer science or IT after having gone through Code4CT. The girls also went on to attend the Innovation Summit and 2nd Annual PHP Youth Conference in Cape Town.

The crowdfunding campaign hopes to raise R150 000, which will go to:

  • Developing a scalable model by training university students to run the program on multiple sites.
  • Increasing the focus on continued skills development after the holiday program by matching girls with learning opportunities that align with their personal goals and interests.
  • Actively engaging local industry partners and pair the girls with a female mentor from local industry.

The campaign has raised R2 400 of its target so far and has 27 days before funding closes.

Visit the Code4CT crowdfunding page for more information and read up on other ways you can help out.
