Far Cry 4 art tells the story of the game’s design

Ubisoft has shown off six examples of art pulled straight from their upcoming shooter, Far Cry 4. But not to simply show the game off – each image is accompanied by a detailed explanation of what the development team was trying to achieve with that specific scenario.

It’s a detailed look into parts of the game, and a very welcome one to students of gaming and gamers in general. Sometimes, when we play, we don’t realise just how much effort developers put into the smallest details that are so often overlooked.

For instance, take this particular shot:

And then read the accompanying caption:

“It may seem like an easy or obvious thing, but having many different environments and climates means a lot of work just to make everything feel cohesive. We can’t use the same characters in a snowy environment as we can in a jungle or forest environment, and we even need to change the way they understand their environment: they see a shorter distance in a snowstorm for example. It’s a massive amount of work to make something that will hopefully be invisible to players as everything feels logical and believable.”

That is the sort of detail Ubisoft is putting into Far Cry 4 to make it the best Far Cry we’ve played yet. The other five images and the insights they share are well worth a gander, which you can do over at The Guardian.

Perhaps over time as gamers become more familiar with the design process, they will appreciate just how much work went into making their favourite games. Me, I salute game developers for their hard work and dedication, and I can’t wait to see how Far Cry 4’s many, many details and systems come together when the game releases on the 18th of November.
