Samsung goes full metal smartphone in Asia

For years the tech industry has looked down upon one aspect of Samsung’s designs with almost unanimous disdain, that being the heavy use of plastic in the construction of its flagship smartphones.

While the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and the Galaxy Note 4 have dabbled in metal with aluminium frames, the A series of Galaxy smartphones is the first from Samsung to feature a full metal chassis.

The newly announced Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 are a pair of mid-range smartphones with 5 megapixel front cameras aimed at the selfie-centric youth demographic in Asia who’s preference has, according to Samsung’s research, switched to metal frames. The larger of the two is the Galaxy A5 which features a 5 inch, 720p AMOLED display and a 1.2GHz quad core processor with 2GB of RAM and a 2 300mAh battery. it has a 13 megapixel rear camera and comes with 16GB of expandable storage. The smaller Galaxy A3 drops those figures to just 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 1 900mAh battery that powers a 4.5 inch 540×960, qHD resolution display.

Aiming the Galaxy A series at the selfie-taking masses means that there is, of course, an increased focus on the camera software and lenses for the A5 and the A3. The front-facing camera lenses can shoot pictures with a 100 degree field of view in portrait orientation and a 120 degree angle in landscape or panorama mode. There’s a GIF maker which combines up to 20 shots taken with a burst-mode-like holding down of the shutter button into a single moving GIF with a speed of 1-10 frames per second which can then be shared out to your friends.

The Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 will be lunching in Asia in November in a range of colours including Pearl White, Midnight Black, Platinum Silver, Soft Pink, Light Blue and Champagne Gold with a planned global roll out following afterwards.

We’ll let you know if the networks plan to bring them out locally as soon as they let us know.
