Apple’s new tool will help you determine if an iPhone has been stolen

With the recent spate of electronic store robberies in Gauteng, where most of the goods looted were mobile phones, Apple has now released a tool that will be able to tell you if the second-hand iPhone you are about to buy has been stolen.

The online tool is called Activation Lock Status, and will let you if the smartphone has been remotely locked by the original owner in the case that it has been stolen.

“Before you purchase an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch from somebody else, make sure that Find My Phone Activation Lock is turned off and the device is ready for you to use,” Apple explains on the tool’s website.

Once you have done that, all you then need to do is enter the IMEI or serial number into the text box and hit enter.

The tool is also useful to find out if the iPhone in question has been doulCi-activated. DoulCi is a tool used by hackers to bypass Apple’s iCloud activation lock, which then allows for the restoration of the unit. If a phone has been doulCi-activated, it operates as a normal phone, but won’t connect to a mobile network.

In August three separate iStores were robbed in Gauteng. The first store was robbed in Cresta, and two days later the Glen Shopping Mall’s branch bared the brunt of another audacious attack – after which Centurion was hit a couple of days later.

Accordng to early media reports, around R1 million worth of Apple units were stolen – possibly to be resold to unsuspecting buyers.
