Beast-riding warchief DLC to add more flavour to Shadow of Mordor

Shadow of Mordor is a great game, to the point where it’s actually my primary contender for Game of the Year. But let’s be honest, Talion felt a little overpowered toward the end of the game, and while that’s all well and good I and a lot of gamers I’ve spoken to feel he could have used a bit more of a challenge.

Well, he’s getting exactly that in the first major DLC drop for the game. It’s called Lord of the Hunt, and it’s all about Sauron’s (amusingly half-baked) plan to rid Mordor of monsters by sending “Beastmaster Warchiefs” out to exterminate them, which are warchiefs that ride beasts. Yes, that’s right, not only are the game’s baddest orcs hitting the plains en masse, they will be riding acid-spewing ogres. How badass does that sound?

Naturally, new monsters are introduced for those warchiefs to ride and exterminate, and Talion must use his powers of Domination to turn them against these new Beastmasters, and prove that there’s really only one master of the beasts – him.

Lord of the Hunt features new missions and challenges, new runes to earn and more interaction with Torvin, the game’s sexually-ambiguous dwarf. Online feedback has indicated that Torvin and his decidedly non-traditional dwarven personality was a hit among gamers, so of course Monolith would want to revisit him.

Kotaku’s rundown of the DLC also mentions that it will bring variations of the game’s two most intimidating creatures, the caragor and graug. Caragath are sleeker versions of the caragor, and “wretched graugs” are poison-spitting variations of the regular graugs, so this DLC pack adds lots of new things to see and do and kill and be killed by to the game.

Interestingly, the Season Pass for the game which includes the Lord of the Hunt DLC is R199 for the Xbox One and R369 for the PlayStation 4. That’s quite a difference.
