Only 22% of South Africans are on Facebook

Social media website Facebook is one of the most visited sites in the world, with 854 million active visitors per day. But while almost of half of those living in the US and Canada are regular Facebookers, , less than a quarter of South Africa’s population makes use of the service.

Research done by World Wide Worx has revealed that South Africa has about 11.8 million Facebook users, roughly 22.3% of the population – and of that, there is definite split between the middle in terms of gender use.

The research indicated that there is about 5.6 million male users on the site, and equally 5.6 million female users as well.

“This is a clear sign of both the maturity of the platform and its mainstream use as an everyday tool rather than as a high-tech choice,” says Arthur Goldstuck, managing director of World Wide Worx said in a press statement.

There is also a rather interesting nugget in the usage pattern of the 11.8 million users, as 8.8 million access it on their mobile phones. This correlates with recent findings from Facebook itself, where it revealed that most of Facebook’s African users access the site through mobile handsets.

“People in high-growth countries want to be connected to the world around them. In countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, Turkey, and elsewhere, mobile devices are increasingly the way people find new information, and share their new experiences in the world.  We also know that people will experience Facebook in unique ways across the world, especially in high-growth regions like Africa,” said Nicola Mendelsohn, EMEA VP at Facebook, in a press statement at the time.

In September Facebook announced that the social media website struck a new record, with over 100 million subscribers originating from the continent.
