Get your .joburg, .capetown and .durban city domain name now

Taking ICANN’s plans to create city domain names a step further in South Africa, the General Availability (GA) of .joburg, .capetown and .durban has now been opened. What that means, is that those three city domain names is now up for grabs by anyone.

From today, individuals or organisations can register their website as a .joburg, .capetown or .durban, but you have to act quickly as it will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Domains.co.za managing director Wayne Diamond explained that the new domain names will be great for local businesses, and it will give the internet a bit of local flavour.

“GA means that anyone – whether in South Africa or abroad – can register a dotJoburg, dotCapeTown or dotDurban city domain name with Domains.co.za for just R275. Choosing a domain name with some local flavour should work well for many companies. As dotJoburg, dotCapeTown and dotDurban are new domains, everyone has an equal opportunity to get on board early,” he said in a media statement.

According to BizCommunity, there has been a higher demand for the .capetown cTLD than .joburg, which has come as a bit of a surprise.

“The 623 applications for .capetown city Top-Level Domains received to date by the ZA Central Registry far outstrip the predicted favourite of .joburg which has seen 297 cTLD applications. The ZACR has received 250 .durban cTLD applications. In total, this means that there are currently some 1,170 launch applications for ZAdotCity domain names,” it stated.

Diamond said back in September that the new domain names are more than just internet addresses, they’re about pride.

“Any organisation or individual with a particular affinity for one of South Africa’s three best-known cities can apply now to claim their own piece of one of these valuable brands. It is about more than pride, however – associating oneself with a particular city through one of these domains allows customers to know more about you and positions your business far more clearly.”

If you would like to apply for one of the new city domain names, head on over to the ZA Central Registry to lodge your application.
