Play the new Alone in the Dark co-op

The more I see of Alone in the Dark: Illumination, the more I want to play it. The latest trailer for the game shows off its eerie environments, its use of light and darkness for subtle and not-so-subtle scare effects and a handful of enemies, along with a brief snippet of its co-op. While its budget look and the apparent emphasis on action is a little worrying, I’m still intrigued.

I’m also a little puzzled as to why they’ve added co-op to a game whose specific hook is scary, dark solitude, not dragging along up to three of your friends for the ride, but I’m not complaining – this looks pretty scary and I – and many other gamers – will probably appreciate the company.

The Steam Store page where you can preorder the game for R330 ($29.99) says you can play on your own if you like, so fortunately it doesn’t appear the multiplayer will be forced on players. Fans will likely get the “Alone” experience they’re looking for while those of a more action-oriented disposition will also get to partake, and people who scare easily will be able to bring friends along for a bit of moral support.

The idea behind it is that you play as one of four character classes – Hunter, Witch, Priest or Engineer – each with their own powers and abilities as you investigate the fictional town of Lorwich, a place that’s been overrun by evil. Naturally, you must get to the bottom of it all while fighting off hordes of monsters using guns and light, and you’ll be taken “through the blasted landscape of Lorwich, and deep below to unearth the mysteries of this forsaken township.” Creepy.

The Steam page says it’s inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and features characters who are descended from the protagonists of earlier games, which should make for some interesting storytelling if done right.

If you pre-order now, apparently you’ll be granted access to the game’s beta test, which will take place shortly before the game launches. Since it comes out in “Fall 2014”, that’s right around the corner.

Anyway, here’s the trailer. Crank it up to 1080p and enjoy!
