“Startup MBA” skills development course set to begin at JoziHub

Joburg tech hub JoziHub sends word that it’s starting up a program of events geared specifically at teaching young South African entrepreneurs how to run a startup business, and there’s still time to sign up for the first evening of training tomorrow night.

The Startup Business Skills Development Program is an informal crash course in business nous for small tech firms, and runs from tomorrow through to March next year. Attendance is on a per-event basis, and there’s a mix of talks, presentations, workshops and seminars planned.

Many young startups fail in South Africa not because the ideas behind them aren’t strong, but because developing them into a business takes skills that aren’t taught in typical college courses.

The November timetable is up on the JoziHub website now, and each event costs R50 (which includes a coffee from the excellent in-house franchise). Tomorrow night’s event is particularly unmissable as it’s a guide to how to get investment and handle IP: a daunting first hurdle that topples many a startup before they even begin.

The full program for this month is below.

5th November – 17:30 for 18:00 until 19:00

Venture Capital and IP for Startups – Presented by Adams & Adams – John Ndlovu will be covering brand development and protection; Ian Learmonth will be focusing on IP structures and media; Helgard Janse van Rensburg will be addressing tax structures, exchange control and other relevant commercial topics; Reinhardt Biermann will be looking at funding structures and how IP can be used in securing funding for startups.
