It’s raining pics: awesome images and photo walks coming to Newtown in Joburg Photo Umbrella

To celebrate local as well as international photographers and their works, the month-long Joburg Photo Umbrella will kick off this weekend at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown. It’s the first public photography-specific programme in the city, and aims to bring together a wide range of photographic works and creators.

“The idea of an umbrella being inclusive of different elements is key to this project, as it seeks to include various visual art institutions that operate within Johannesburg. Working in partnership with these various institutions to develop interest in photography and create a platform to cultivate visual literacy by making the medium more accessible to the general public, the Joburg Photo Umbrella seeks to encourage critical engagement of photography by working through the boundaries, which the discipline negotiates,” Joburg Photo Umbrella said in a statement.

For those that want to partake in the celebration of photography, there will be exhibitions, talks, screenings and workshops scattered across the city in November, all forming part of the Joburg Photo Umbrella.

The main attraction, exhibition called A Return to Elsewhere, is a collaboration between UK photographer Kalpesh Lathigra and local photographer Thabiso Sekgala. It was a co-commission for the Joburg Photo Umbrella and Brighton Photo Biennial 2014, and the photographers “have chosen to explore communities and the representation, exploring understandings of belonging, histories, silence, memory and loss.”
