GTA V remaster lets you be a criminal from a first person perspective

Rockstar, the studio behind Grand Theft Auto V has released a video showing off the brand-new first-person mode that’s coming with the Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4 versions of the game.

The official blurb on Rockstar’s UK YouTube page says “Exclusive to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto V, this new mode gives players the chance to explore the world of Los Santos and Blaine County directly through the eyes of their character, revealing all the world’s glorious details in an entirely new way.”

To make it happen, Polygon reports that Rockstar added thousands of brand-new animations to the game, and I must say the video makes GTA V look like a brand-new game as a result. Those few minutes of footage are enough to make me believe the first-person mode wasn’t just tacked on as an afterthought, or a careless hack that simply moves the player’s perspective to that of the antagonists’ eyes – this was done with care and consideration by a talented developer.

Take a look and see if you agree:

IGN’s Daniel Krupa was lucky enough to get some hands-on time with the PS4/Xbox One/PC version of the game, and his impressions are very positive. The most telling of his comments was this:

“From shooters to action games, we’re all used to adopting first-person, but the way in which this new perspective transforms the GTA 5 experience can’t be understated; it fundamentally alters how you inhabit and interact with this world. It rewrites the experience, both in single-player and online.”

Unfortunately for owners of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA V, this new way to play isn’t coming to those platforms, perhaps as a way to entice players to re-buy the game. Will that tactic work? If you own the game already, are you interested in trading up?

Me, I’m keen.

GTA V is out for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on the 18th of November, and for PC on the 27th of January, 2015.
