GTA V’s PS4/PS3 graphics compared

With all the fuss over Grand Theft Auto V’s imminent arrival on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it was inevitable that videos would start surfacing comparing the previous-gen versions with these shiny new ones.

And that’s exactly what has happened: Sony has put together a video illustrating the rather large differences in quality between the PS4 and PS3 versions of the game, and posted it to their official PlayStation YouTube channel. They’ve used side-by-side footage from both versions, and separated them with a moving white line that shows the same scenes as they appear on both consoles, and the differences are astounding.

I never thought the previous-gen versions of the game looked bad, but there’s no denying the improvements made possible by the PlayStation 4’s hardware, particularly when it comes to lighting, volumetric fog and surface reflections, elements that drastically enhance any scene’s feel. Rain splashing down on neon-lit tarmac also looks significantly more realistic, and I’m a sucker for that sort of thing.

The game’s foliage also benefits quite a bit; you’ll see in the video below how the PS4 makes trees and grass look better, and you’ll notice details appearing on cactii that just wasn’t there before. It’s truly impressive.

Add all of these graphical touches to an already-brilliant game, and I’m so ready to dive back into Los Santos when the new versions come out on the 18th.

Before you watch the clip, here’s a tip: When you get the first of the assassination missions as Franklin, don’t do them until the end of the game when you’re a little (hah!) better off, financially. The ability to affect stock prices by shooting certain people means you can make a killing (ba dum tish) if you buy the right stocks before taking out your targets. Just saying.

Anyway, here’s the video. Enjoy!
