[MAP MONDAY] Where are the renewable power plants in South Africa?

After the last week or so of strife from Eskom, there’s been more than a couple of discussions in the office about what the future of power in this country is. Nuclear and fracking dominate the mainstream news, and yet there’s a huge and interesting variety of renewable initiatives around the country which no-one ever seems to mention.

Our plan was to go out and map all of the major projects like solar power plants which are either in use or under construction or consideration in South Africa.

Imagine our surprise to discover that such a map not only already exists, but is meticulously maintained by Energy Blog. It gives us great pleasure to link to it this Map Monday. Stephen Forder there has put together a list of projects which have been approved or applied for approval under the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP) program, which is being implemented in three phases.

Most of the sites are small scale community developments, although even these are pushing considerable numbers (like the 30MW solar plants around the north of the country).

You can find the map here (it’s not embeddable).
