Africa’s largest solar farm comes online in Kimberley

The Jasper solar power project built by  US company SolarReserve (with funding from Google in the Northern Cape) is now fully operational. Nearly two months ahead of schedule, it has begun providing 96 megawatts of power to the grid as part of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) – say that ten times quickly.

“In addition to helping South Africa meet its critical electricity needs, the Jasper Project will bring long lasting economic benefits to the region,” said SolarReserve’s CEO Kevin Smith. “We look forward to continuing this positive momentum and bringing value to South Africa through collaboration on further projects, including our upcoming CSP projects that will provide South Africa with clean, reliable and non-intermittent electricity, day and night.”

It’s no secret that South Africa is in desperate need of a more stable power grid and if that energy can be renewable and clean instead of damaging to the environment, then all the better for us. With more than 325 000 photovoltaic modules, Jasper is set to provide around 180 000 megawatt-hours of electricity every year which is estimated to be enough electricity for up to 80 000 households over the 20 year power purchase agreement that has been signed with Eskom.
