The people who hand out records for stupid things like “Cycling backward with a violin” have named Call of Duty as the best-ever gaming series, beating other franchises like Halo and Grand Theft Auto to the top spot.
The results were revealed in the Guinness World Records 2015 Gamers’ Edition, which came out recently. Curious about the top 10? Here’s the complete list:

- Super Mario Bros.
- Minecraft
- Grand Theft Auto
- Halo
- The Legend of Zelda
- FIFA
- Assassin’s Creed
- Battlefield
- The Elder Scrolls
If you disagree with that list – and you should, because there’s no way Minecraft should beat the likes of FIFA, Battlefield or The Elder Scrolls – I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s not like Guinness is even relevant any more (see the aforementioned stupid record) and besides, the results were gathered by asking 5 000 fans of the book to vote for their favourite games online according to PlayStationLifestyle.net. 5 000 people isn’t exactly a proper sampling of the planet’s gaming community, leaving much to be desired about Guinness’s methodology. I’m just glad 4Chan didn’t get wind of the poll and vote something like My Little Pony into top position as they are wont to do.
That said, I don’t entirely disagree with Call of Duty being on top. It has become a cultural phenomenon with its annual releases, and even though it has generated a lot of hate from disgruntled gamers who’ve accused it of being the same game every year just dressed up slightly differently, sales don’t lie, and Call of Duty is still doing pretty well on that front having sold over 190 million copies worldwide so far. Not even mega-franchise Grand Theft Auto can beat those figures.
