YouTube launches R100 a month music subscription service

News of YouTube introducing a pay-for-play subscription service for music videos has been doing the rounds for a few months and the company has finally officially launched the beta version of the premium service called YouTube Music Key.

YouTube Music Key lets you watch music videos from the Android and iOS app or web without the hassle of annoying advertising. You can also keep listening even if you’re offline, lock your mobile’s screen or open another app.

YouTube has also thrown in a subscription to Google Play Music (which is unfortunately not available in South Africa yet), curated playlists and the ability to upload your own music videos.

Subscriptions to YouTube Music Key will cost $9.99 (around R110) a month but you won’t be able to get your hands on it just yet because the company is first making the Music Key beta available to users in the US, UK, Portugal, Italy, Finland, Ireland and Spain. They’ll get to use the service free of charge for the next six months and thereafter pay a discounted price of $7.99 (around R80) a month.

The company did say it will expand Music Key to the rest of the world “soon” but in the meantime you can watch the YouTube Music Key promo video below:
