Eskom: Turn off pool pumps, power supply getting tight

There’s a chill in the air up here on the Highveld today, and that’s bad news for Eskom. The state power utility has released an update today which says that a cold snap plus rain near coal supplies are pushing supply levels close to tipping points, although it isn’t predicting more loadshedding just yet.

According to its latest update, Eskom says that wet coal at Majubua – the Mpumalanga power station which caused chaos at the start of November when a storage silo collapsed – is a potential problem because coal is being stored in the open (presumably as a result of the loss of the silo).

The utility is asking customers to reduce consumption where possible, and the My Eskom app above – which is a pretty useful indicator of grid status – is show high demand at the limits of stable consumption.

From the official statement:

“Less is more this summer and homeowners and businesses can do so with just four steps: first, switching off geysers and pool pumps; second, switching off non-essential lights; third, efficient use of air-conditioners by keeping the room temperature at 23⁰C; and finally, responding to the alerts on TV each evening.”
