The Nokia N1 is a great looking iPad Mini clone that runs Android

If it looks like an iPad Mini, has a unibody aluminium body like an iPad Mini and has the same display as an iPad Mini, then it is probably an Android tablet from Nokia. That’s right: the company that was left behind after Microsoft tore Nokia asunder has released its first bit of hardware since the split, an Android tablet called the Nokia N1.

And looking at its first hardware announcement post-cleaving, it’s got a chance of outselling the Microsoft Surface on its first outing with a rival OS. That’d have to hurt.

Apart from failing the duck test, the Nokia N1 bares a striking resemblance to the aforementioned tablet from Apple although, at just 6.9mm thick and 318 grams in weight,  it’s both slightly thinner and lighter than the latest iPad Mini 3. Its unibody aluminium frame looks eerily similar to the iPad Mini’s down to the reversible connector on the bottom edge although it is a reversible USB Type-C connector rather than Apple’s Lightning Connector. The display matches the iPad Mini’s Retina pixel for pixel with a 2 048×1 536 resolution packed into the same 7.9 inch diagonal space as Apple’s tablet.

The Nokia N1 is powered by a quad core 2.4GHz Atom processor from Intel with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage and runs on the latest version of Google’s Android operating system called Lollipop or Android 5.0 for those averse to the marketing jargon. The OS is completely devoid of the usual tweakery that we see from the likes of Samsung with TouchWiz but does include Nokia’s home-made Z Launcher as the default launcher of choice.

The Nokia N1 is set to go on sale in China for around $249 before local taxes some time in the early part of 2015 and will be making its way to Russia and some European countries shortly thereafter and, if a certain mobile and hardware correspondent has anything to do with it, at least one should arrive in South Africa as well.
