[MAP MONDAY] How many WiFi hotspots are there worldwide?

A new WiFi hotspot pops up every single second somewhere around the world, adding to the already-impressive number of 47 million-plus hotspots identified from data collected by Maravedis Rethink since 2013, and compiled into an interactive map called the WiFi Growth Map created by Web Enertia.Screenshot (311)

According to the WiFi Growth Map, hotspots grew a massive 80% from 26 543 497 by the end of 2013 to 47 683 408 (and counting) in 2014.

Here’s a breakdown of where main hotspots are:

  • 10 879 on aeroplanes, trains and airports
  • 7 505 853 in retail shops, cafes and hotels
  • 35 529 850 in people’s homes

Homespots are seeing the biggest increase worldwide, with at least one hotspot being added per second.

In Africa and the Middle East, there were only 32 150 commercial hotspots across different shops, airports, planes, hotels and other locations, and zero community hotpsots in 2013. This year, that number has grown over 1000% to over 37 000 commercial hotspots and 425 000 community hotspots and counting.

According to international WiFi provider iPass, which hosts the WiFi Growth Map on its website, global hotspot numbers will grow to over 340 million by 2018. Currently there’s about one WiFi hotspot for 150 people on earth, by 2018 that number will have gone down to one hotspot for every 20 people.
