Xbox’s Major Nelson has unveiled the Games with Gold lineup for December: Xbox One subscribers get Worms Battlegrounds for free, while Xbox 360 owners get adventure game Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief until the 16th, and then SSX until the end of the month.

SSX is about the best of the bunch as it’s a rather good downhill snowboarding simulator that lets you pull off incredible tricks, and Worms can be a lot of fun with friends, so the lineup isn’t what I’d call bad, but I’d wouldn’t call it amazing, either.

Games with Gold is Microsoft’s “free” games programme that rewards Xbox Live Gold members with games that are theirs to download and keep. “Free” is in inverted commas because an annual subscription to XBL costs R499.

It competes directly with Sony’s PlayStation Plus, which takes a different approach of offering an Instant Game Collection that lets PS Plus subscribers download and play a number of games, which change every month and are only free to play as long as they’re in the Instant Game Collection lineup.

Here’s an official trailer for SSX that should get those of you who haven’t played it yet at least a little excited for the latter half of December:

Deon got his first taste of PC gaming at the tender age of 11 when his father bought an 8088 XT, ostensibly to "help him with his homework". Instead, it introduced him to Leisure Suit Larry, King Graham, Sonny Bonds and many more, and Deon has been a PC gamer and hardware enthusiast ever since. He landed his first professional writing gig in 2006 at a prestigious local PC magazine, a very happy happenstance as he got to write for a living about things he loves - tech, PCs, gaming, and everything in between. He's been writing about it all ever since, and loves every minute of it.
