Ubisoft apologises for Assassin’s Creed: Unity with free stuff

Great news for anyone who bought Assassin’s Creed: Unity – Ubisoft is giving away free DLC for all players as an apology for the state of the game, and if you hold a Season Pass, you will have the choice of another Ubisoft game as further compensation.

The Assassin’s Creed blog was updated with the news, delivered by none other than Ubisoft Montreal president Yannis Mallat.

He wrote “Unfortunately, at launch, the overall quality of the game was diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues. I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin’s Creed team. These problems took away from your enjoyment of the game, and kept many of you from experiencing the game at its fullest potential.”

To make it up to gamers, everyone who owns the game, regardless of platform, will get the upcoming Dead Kings downloadable content for free when it becomes available.

The Assassin’s Creed wikia says “Dead Kings will take you from the bloody streets of revolutionary Paris to the troubled city of Saint-Denis. Arno leaves Paris seeking isolation and finds himself wrapped up in the mysteries surrounding Saint-Denis. Explore the city’s extensive underground with Arno’s lantern. Arm yourself with Arno’s explosive new Guillotine Gun and take on the secretive Raider faction that’s desecrating the catacombs. Discover new side missions and solve puzzles in the depths of the catacombs.”

Season Pass holders will have the following games to choose from:

  • Far Cry 4
  • The Crew
  • Watch_Dogs
  • Just Dance 2015
  • Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag
  • Rayman Legends

Mallat said Ubisoft is in the process of setting up the delivery mechanisms for these games, and a further announcement will be made once it’s ready to go. They’ve put up a Frequently Asked Questions page to address gamers curious about the details.

We reported on Wednesday that Patch 3 for the game was in the works, and it was ready to go by the time I got home yesterday. It claimed to fix over 300 issues with the game, with further fixes planned for future updates, so Ubisoft is clearly committed to the game.

My take on this is that Ubisoft has handled the problem as any games company that messes up should: with an apology, free stuff for those who don’t care for sentiment and a visible, ongoing commitment to making their game as good as it should have been at launch.
