LEGO robot championships coming to Sci-Bono this weekend

What better way to spend your weekend watching robots made from LEGO compete? Nope, that’s a winner for us too. So the good news is that the First LEGO League of South Africa is holding its 2014 Championship event on Friday and Saturday at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg. Successful teams from the regional qualifiers will take part in the competition, facing off for top honours.

The event, which starts on 5th of December and ends on the 6th, will see teams pitting their robotic LEGO creations against an obstacle course full of objectives. They will be judged on how well they do, what they were thinking when implementing their strategy and how well they all work together.

According to the organisation, there are two parts to the Challenge teams will face over the course of the Championship, namely the Robot Game and the Project.

In the Robot Game, teams design, build, program and test unique robots that must perform a series of tasks, or missions in under 2.5 minutes through multiple iterations and strategy replanning.

In the Project, teams research a real-world problem in the field of the Challenge theme, create an innovative solution and then share their findings with schoolmates, the public, specialists and a panel of judges.

The Championship isn’t just about winning, however – it’s also about teams demonstrating the “core values” of the First LEGO League, which is Gracious Professionalism and something the organisation calls “Coopertition”, which means co-operative competition. And of course teams are encouraged to have fun while doing so.

Things kick off at 11am on Friday, and wrap up at 15:00 on Saturday evening. Anyone can attend, and refreshments are available at the Centre throughout the event’s duration.
