West African Gaming Expo rescheduled due to ebola

Back in July we wrote about the West African Gaming Expo that was to take place in Nigeria at the Oriental Hotel Lagos in September.

Between then and now, the region had a bit of a scare with the whole ebola crisis that unfolded, prompting the organisers to re-schedule the event for the 18th, 19th and 20th of December, 2014, something that was only announced recently via the WAGE Facebook page.

We were informed via email that the venue has also changed: WAGE14 will now take place at the Teslim Balogun Indoor Stadium in Lagos, as opposed to the Oriental Hotel Lagos.

The line-up of attractions remains the same: three days of exhibitors, talks, tutorials and workshops as well as games across all platforms for attendees to play.

These are the speakers that have been confirmed thus far:

  • Abiola Olaniran from Gamesole, a game studio based in Nigeria
  • Zubair Abubakar from Chopup Games, a mobile game developer from Lagos
  • Dami Solesi from Smids Animation Studios, a company that specialises in 3D animation
  • Idamiebi Ilamina-Eremie from Sonbim Games

More speakers are in the works, but they have yet to confirm their attendance. I was told by the organisers that they “are awaiting names of speakers from companies such as Mainone, Solo Mobile, UNICEF, Central Bank Africa.”

The 18th will be the day to be there for various talks, covering subjects like how gaming can be used in education, how the gaming industry can create jobs within communities, how to create entrepreneurs in ICT and more.

The 19th is a day for tutorials and workshops, however the venue has not yet been confirmed and the organisers don’t yet have final details for these, but they have assured me they are forthcoming. There will also be game launches and press conferences held on the 19th.

The 20th is set aside for the exhibition, which will showcase various tournaments (FIFA 15, War games) and feature more game launches by several prominent Nigerian game studios. It’s also the day to experience games across all platforms, along with face-painting and general game-related revelry.

If you’re in the area on those dates, consider popping in to see a bit of what game developers in the region have to offer.
