Stephen Hawking warns against the robot apocalypse… again

To say that Stephen Hawking is a smart guy is to put things a little bit mildly and, as such, when he warns the human race about something that could potentially be the end of our existence on our planet Earth we should probably take heed of it.

In an interview with the BBC, Hawking once again concluded that the human race should take great care in creating artificial intelligences because “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.”

The warning is eerily similar to one given by SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk last month.

“The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most. This is not a case of crying wolf about something I don’t understand,” Musk commented on an article about AI.

Projects like Robo Brain have already created a centralised intelligence resource for robots to retrieve a set of instructions to complete tasks from the internet. A robot could, for instance, could find out how to use a microwave by asking Robo Brain for the instructions required to use one. From there it’s not to big of a leap of the imagination to imagine how the instructions to kill all of the humans could potentially be disseminated to every internet-connected robot from it’s AI master.

Artificial Intelligence is still one of the most exciting fields of research being investigated right now and has the potential to solve a whole host of problems should we get it right. However the costs of getting it wrong could be disastrous on a global scale.
