One of the glorious things about Maker Faire Africa is that many of the ideas on display down at Sci-Bono this weekend weren’t especially high tech. Designer-maker Mia Van Zyl makes sophisticated one off installations and puppets for special events as her day job, but for this expo her design was deceptively simple: a huge chandelier lit with multi-coloured LED lights made entirely of paper plates.
The trick – apparently – is folding the plates right. And to do that, Van Zyl has used a laser CNC cut plastic template which visitors with which visitors to her stand could fold their own. Just bend the plate around the template, staple together and voila: acme instant lighting feature.
Nice ice breaker for a dinner party, maybe? You could certainly combine it with this WiFi controlled lamp to great effect.
