The first official King’s Quest game since 1998 is coming next year

A new King’s Quest is coming!

A trailer for the game was shown off at the Game Awards that took place on Saturday, introduced by none other than Ken and Roberta Williams, the couple behind the computer entertainment powerhouse Sierra Online of the 1980s and 90s.

It will get here sometime in 2015, and will be out for the PlayStation 3/4, as the trailer clearly shows at the end. It will be the first official King’s Quest game since the release of the awful King’s Quest VIII that was released back in 1998.

The Sierra brand was retired in the mid-2000s after various re-brandings and acquisition-related problems, only to be resurrected earlier this year by Activision as a label under which to publish Indie games. Development duties for the new King’s Quest will be handled by The Odd Gentlemen, a studio best-known for the charming adventure game The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom.

While I was excited to hear the announcement – the King’s Quest series formed the foundation of the obsession with videogames that has been part of my life since I was 11 – I am not all that happy with what I see in the trailer. The new game looks like a platformer and not a traditional point-and-click adventure, and while the final result may well turn out to be eminently playable and somehow retain the heart of the previous games, I’m a little worried it will only have a tangential relationship with the original games.

Still, whatever the final result at the very least the King’s Quest name has been resurrected, and I will once again be able to step into the shoes of fictional royalty in order to save a fictional kingdom/family member/stranger from distress, even if it is by leaping over obstacles and battling side-scrolling controls.
