Revamped Flight Simulator X coming to Steam next week

Time to get excited, all ye fans of flight simulatory goodness: December 18 sees a revamped version of 2006’s Flight Simulator X coming to Steam.

Yes, that’s right, the last Microsoft game dedicated to making the virtual experience of piloting a real-world aircraft as realistic as possible is making a bit of a comeback.

Dovetail Games, the people behind the oddly-popular Train Simulator series, announced by press release yesterday that they are re-releasing the game specifically for Steam, and that they will be utilising the technology to bring out additional content for the game in the coming year.

Naturally it’s not just a straight re-release: they’ve also added “updated multiplayer functionality, Windows 8.1 support and over 24,000 airports, delivering a beautiful, connected world and vast horizon begging to be explored.”

In case you missed it back in 2006, Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition lets players step into the cockpits of over 20 real-world aircraft ranging from commercial and fighter jets to single-engine private planes and helicopters. There are over 80 missions to fly, ranging from search and rescue challenges to test pilot scenarios and more.

What made the game so popular is its incredibly realistic flight model and detailed 3D graphics. In fact, controls and flight physics in Flight Sim X are so accurate that logging time playing the game has almost the exact same educational value as sitting in an actual cockpit with a flight instructor, so if you’re even remotely interested in becoming a pilot it’s a great place to start investigating.

(If you’d like to watch a few videos to get a sense of what the game is about and how it plays, there are a bunch of videos online of the original in action that should do the trick.)

Dovetail mentioned that Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition will go on sale at “a spectacular introductory price” when it arrives on Steam on the 18th of December, so keep an eye out for it.
