The biggest topics that got the world talking on Facebook

In July this year, the 20th FIFA World Cup broke the record for the event with the most engagement on Facebook with over 1 billion shares, posts, comments, likes being shared by 220 million people. As the year comes to a close, Facebook has revealed the most talked about topic list from around the world in 2014.

Ebola sits at number two on the list and is still making headlines worldwide as the virus continues to take more lives in parts of West Africa since it the first outbreak in years was reported in March. (One way Facebook has given a lending hand was by partnering with the Praekelt Foundation to provide information on ebola through an app on the free Internet.org service, currently available in Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania.)

Tributes poured in for Robin Williams after the world learned of his tragic death back in August – the actor and comedian was honoured across social media and even immortalised in World of Warcraft after gamers petitioned Blizzard to do so a way to remember the famous gamer. Williams is the most talked about individual on the Facebook list at number four.

Loved by supporters and loathed by critics, the #IceBucketChallenge, sitting at number five, took off from the US (and even made its way to South Africa) as celebrities such as Bill Gates and well-known public figures like Desmond Tutu dunked buckets full of ice and water on their heads to raise awareness and pledge funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Motor Neuron Disease.

At number seven is Malaysia Airlines. The mystery around the disappearance of the Malaysia MH370 aeroplane remains unsolved to this day. It didn’t help matters either when scammers were targeting users by posting fake videos claiming it was found in the sea.
