Instagram’s 300 million users make it bigger than Twitter

If a picture says a 1 000 words then Instagram is saying quite a bit this morning with the news that there are now 300 million monthly active users (MAU) of the photo sharing application. In a blog post on the company’s website, Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom made the announcement that sees Instagram rank above Twitter in terms of user base with the micro-blogging site managing ‘just’ 284 million users.

Instagram was acquired by Facebook in April 2012 for around $1 billion (R11.54 billion) with almost no revenue model to speak of. Instagram has since begun to sell sponsored posts to certain brands in the US on a trial basis to see how its users react to the intrusion into their timelines.

The blog post also included the news that Instagram would now be introducing verified account badges “for celebrities, athletes and brands, making it easier for you to connect with the authentic accounts you’re looking for.” It’s nothing new for social media users who will be used to the verified account statuses on Facebook, Twitter and other services.

The last change from the post mentioned that Instagram will be changing its policy with regards to fake and spammy accounts, which have in the past were deactivated but will now be deleted in an effort to clean up the user base.

Facebook now controls some of the largest user bases in the digital world with its massive 1.35 billion MAU joining Instagram’s 300 million and WhatsApp’s 600 million to make a truly formidable online presence.
