SABC chair resigns after lying about qualifications

The office of the President has announced that President Jacob Zuma has accepted the resignation of SABC chairwoman, Ellen Tshabalala, who will also step down from the company’s board of directors, with immediate effect.

Her resignation comes after a parliamentary committee found her guilty of two desperate counts of misconduct on the 10th of December. The first was for fraudulently stating that she had obtained two qualifications from the University of South Africa (UNISA) on her CV when she first applied for the job as head of the SABC, and the second for lying to parliament in an affidavit she submitted stating that her qualifications had been stolen from her home in a burglary.

Last week the parliamentary committee heard from UNISA’s executive director for legal services, Jan van Wyk, that although Ms Tshabalala has previously registered for a BComm degree in both 1988 and 1996 she had failed to obtain the qualification through the university. She also didn’t obtain a diploma in labour relations from UNISA after failing two of the six modules required and not writing the exams for two others (before failing them the following year) and then being told she would not be allowed to re-register for the course.

Tshabalala has blamed UNISA’s computer systems as the reason that her records have been lost and attempted to obtain an interdict that would prevent her from being axed by the SABC last week in the High Court which was dismissed.

The debacle is the latest at the broadcaster who has also had to deal with the suspension of COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng after a public protector’s investigation into his potentially irregular pay rises and hiring policies pointed out that he should no longer be allowed to stay in the position.

It also caps off a tumultuous year for the Department of Communications which was unceremoniously split in two by President Zuma leaving issues like the digital terrestrial television migration up in the air for the better part of 2014.
