Instagram purges millions of fake accounts

As promised when Instagram broke the news of its 300 million users earlier this month, the great purge of spammy and fake Instagram accounts finally happened. The biggest loser in what has become known as ‘Instagram Rapture’ was the @instagram account itself which lost 18 880 211 followers overnight or just a little bit over 29% of its total following.

As is the case when anything major happens in the world of social media someone has made a fantastic visualisation of all of the accounts deleted, this time web dev Zach Allia is the man who’s come up with the goods.

Many of the biggest losers have been celebrities who have seen their collective followings purged of millions of bots with the likes of Jutin Bieber and Kim Kardashian losing 3.5 million and 1.3 million followers respectively. A South African face even managed to make the list of the top 100 Instagram accounts and how they were effected by the purge with Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel losing 176 497 followers yesterday.

The highest percentage loser in the purge was the @chiragchirag78 which lost nearly all of its followers falling from 3 660 468 down to just eight before being deleted.

The accounts that were deleted do not form part of the 300 million user number reported on earlier in the month and Instagram had already deactivated them according to its guidelines which”includes repetitive comments, as well as service manipulation in order to self-promote, and extends to commercial spam comments, such as discount codes or URLs to websites,” according to an email sent to Businesss Insider by an Instagram spokesman.
