Thundafund to focus on tech and performance, moving other campaigns to new site

South African crowdfunding site Thundafund has announced that it will host only tech-related and performance campaigns from now on, and that all other community campaigns will be featured a new sister site to be launched next year.

According to Disrupt Africa, the proposed name for the new crowdfunding site is Ripple and it will go live at the end of January. Backers will also be able to separately donate to projects on the new site.

“The tech becomes really important for us and the other side is performance – theatre, music, dances, all of that stuff,” founder of Thundafund Patrick Schofield told Disrupt Africa. “We can build stuff out in the world. Build a really good app and that has the potential to reach the world.”

Since its launch in June last year, Thundafund has hosted 101 projects that have collectively raised R3 504 438 from 4 102 backers. Schofield said Thundafund is aiming at raising around R5 million for itself from Crowdcube, a crowdfunding site from the UK.
