Maths matric pass rate falls to 53.5%, sciences down too

Education minister Angie Motshekga is just about to make the official government announcement about this year’s matric results, but the headline figures for subjects are already out.

The acting DG for education briefed press on the results earlier this evening, confirming widespread suspicions that results are down compared to last year.

The overall pass rate for 2013 was 78.2%, this year it’s 75.8%.

The pass rate for mathematics fell from 59.1% last year to 53.5% this year, while mathematical literacy fell from 87.1% to 84.1%.

In sciences, the numbers for physical sciences are down from 67.4% in 2013 to 61.5%, while life sciences is slightly up from 73.7% to 73.8%.

Agricultural sciences and accounting both saw increases in the percentage of passes from 80.7% to 82.6% for the former and an increase from 65.7% to 68% for the latter.

16 schools had a zero% pass rate, compared to nine last year while 515 schools hit 100% pass rates, down from 551 in 2013.

The number of full time candidates sitting the exams fell from 562 112 to 550 127.

During her speech, Motshekga added that 135 000 pupils are eligible to take supplementary exams in the autumn. She said that she hoped these exams would increase the overall pass rate to a figure comparable with last year.
