[REVIEW] Drift Stealth 2 action camera

Action cameras are great little things. Stick them in the right place, and you will more than likely be able to record some amazing footage of whatever you are up to. While there are a good number of action cameras available on the market, sometimes the smaller the model the better.

And actually, when you think about it, all you need is a device that can easily record in 1080p, be small in size and without any fuss – and that is exactly where the Drift Stealth 2 action camera comes in.

The camera measures only 80mm x 42mm x 27mm and weighs less than 100g, so it can be easily carried around in your pant’s pocket. But just because it is much smaller than other big name brands like GoPro doesn’t mean that it lacks recording quality. On the contrary, it can hold its own against the best in the industry.

Handling

Drift 2

It should go without saying that due to its small size, it is rather easy to handle – not only from a physical point, but also in terms of operation. On the top (or on the side, depending on how you mount it) are three buttons. One button is to select the mode, the other to make choices in the menus and a third button that functions as the power/record/stop switch.

What more do you want? We can’t state this enough, but the Stealth 2 is incredibly easy to operate, as it really a case of selecting the mode (if it’s not on video already) and hitting record.

But no product is perfect, and one of the few issues that we picked up with the Stealth 2 is that you have to unscrew a backplate to access the USB and mini HDMI ports and to replace the micro SD memory card. It’s not a deal breaker, but it can take some time to get the backplate on correctly and when you need to change memory cards quickly, it can become a bit of a problem.

Image quality

Drift Stealth

Without being silly, the Stealth 2 records in 1080p at 30 frames per second – and that is pretty much all that you need in an action camera. The recorded visuals are crystal clear in all its full HD glory, but there are two other recording modes as well – just in case you want to get creative.

If you want to capture some fast-moving action but slow it down for dramatic effect, you simply switch the mode over to slow-motion and record at 720p at up to 60 frames per second. Granted it’s not as slow (or fast) as other cameras (the iPhone 6 can do slow-motion at 240 and 120 frames per second) but you will be able to get the desired effect.

The action camera also doubles up as a tiny digital camera, as it can capture still images at up to 12 megapixels. It might not sound like much, but it’s a great feature to have.

The Stealth 2 hides another feature that might not be easily spotted by users: it has a 7-element lens that provides an optical 135-degree field of view. In layman’s terms, its means that the lens will make things appear closer to the camera with a wide angle of view.

And the lens itself has a surprise as well, as it can rotate independently 300-degrees from the camera body which will give you the freedom to mount the camera at whatever angle or position you require, and then simply rotate the lens in any directions to give you a straight recording angle.

Conclusion

Eds-ChoiceThe Drift Stealth 2 is one really cool action camera, and being one with the smallest we have seen so far, we were really impressed with what it can do. In terms of price it is pretty much on par with the bigger brands, but it is worth every cent – it’s tiny, easy to use and it does exactly what you want it to.

Even with the 1.3″ Mono Graphic Backlit LCD screen that displays all the relevant information of the shoot, the battery packs a good three hours or recording time which is a lot better than most complicated and larger action cams on the market.

Sometimes bigger isn’t always better, and in the case of the Drift Stealth 2, it made a really good impression on us.
