WhatsApp is now half the size of Facebook

There seems to a pattern with the way active users grow on WhatsApp, if reports from the instant messaging service are to be believed. Every five months beginning from April last year, WhatsApp has racked up over 100 million more users, widening its gap with competitors such as BBM and WeChat.

Today, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum announced on Facebook that the service recently reached 700 million monthly active users and that over 30 billion messages are sent everyday.

“As humbled and excited as we are by these numbers and our continued growth, we’re even more excited to keep building a great product in 2015,” Koum said.

Last April, WhatsApp announced it had 500 million monthly active users and by August it was already on 600 million.

According to a report by World Wide Worx and Fuseware released early last year, WhatsApp had almost 11 million users in South Africa.

The latest figures reported in September on BBM’s monthly active users was 91 million, WeChat on the other hand isn’t lagging quite as far behind WhatsApp compared to BBM, with reports from last November revealing the China-based service had around 468 million monthly active users.

“We’re grateful that so many of you are using WhatsApp to stay in touch with your friends and family, business colleagues and classmates. We promise to continue working hard to make WhatsApp even better,” Koum said.
