The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s hardware needs will make your wallet cry

The minimum and recommended PC hardware specifications needed to run The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have been released by developer CD Projekt Red, and by the looks of them a lot of gamers may have to do a fairly major upgrade in order to get the game to even start.

How major? Well, for starters you’re going to need a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or 8, as the bare minimum amount of RAM needed to even launch the game is 6GB. As you may know, 32-bit operating systems can only use a maximum of 4GB of RAM, and should you still be running one, you’re in for a rather large cash outlay to bring your system up to speed. Another 4GB of RAM goes for R515, and Windows 8.1 costs R1 153.

You’ll also need at least an Intel Core i5-2500k processor, or an AMD Phenom II X4 940. Sorry, Core i3 gamers.

That’s bad enough, but the minimum graphics card requirement is even steeper: if you don’t yet own an NVIDIA GeForce GTX660 or later, or an AMD Radeon HD7970 – high-end cards from just three years ago – you will need to upgrade if you want to play Geralt of Rivia’s latest adventure on your PC.

The recommended cards? NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX770 and AMD’s Radeon R9 290, both of them incredibly powerful cards from 2013 that cost almost as much as a brand-new Xbox One or PlayStation 4 (R5 144 and R5 868 respectively).

Here are the minimum and recommended specificationss in full, as reported by Gamespot:

Minimum:

Intel i5-2500K 3.3GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 940
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870
6GB system RAM
64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8/8.1
DirectX11
40GB of storage

Recommended:

Intel i7 3770 3,4 GHz or AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 or AMD Radeon R9 290
8GB system RAM
64-bit Win 7/Win 8/8.1
DirectX11
40GB of storage

As much as I love my PC, this is a pretty compelling argument for simply buying a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to play The Witcher 3 with the least amount of fuss.

Fortunately, there are still a good few months to go before the game is out on the 19th of May, giving gamers a bit of time to save for the necessary upgrades or console purchases.

This isn’t a game you want to miss if you’re a fan of great storytelling or beautiful, open-world RPGs with mature elements, and if you’re not yet a fan I highly recommend picking up The Witcher 2 from GOG.com or Steam to see what all the fuss is about.

If that’s a bit too much like admin, here’s a 35-minute gameplay video of TW3 instead that should do the trick:
