[CES 2015] Updated Gigabyte Aorus gaming laptops inbound

Gigabyte’s very likeable Aorus range of gaming laptops is set to get even more powerful in 2015, with refreshes of the X3 Plus and X5 announced at CES. The two new models will complement the already updated Aorus X7, which came out late last year sporting two GTX 970 graphics chips.

There’s plenty of reason to salivate over them. For starters, the X5 has been updated with two of NVIDIA’s new GTX 965M graphics chips, giving it even more graphics power than a single GTX 980M in some situations.

That’s not only awesome, but necessary as X5 buyers can opt for a high-end 4K display that uses an Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (IGZO) LCD screen that is far sharper and looks better than any TFT LCD you care to name. With all those pixels on screen at once the X5 will need all the graphics power it can get to play games at high detail settings, but fortunately buyers who value high frame rates over eye-watering resolutions can choose a regular 1080p panel instead if they prefer.

Changes to the new X3 Plus include a single GTX 970M and a 13.9-inch IGZO screen sporting a native resolution of  3 200×1 800. Previous models had GTX 870M chips.

Both the X3 and X5 are not yet out, but Anandtech expects the X3 to hit store shelves overseas in January, and the X5 to arrive sometime in Q2 2015.

For us South Africans, that likely means an even longer wait. I’ve contacted my Gigabyte source for a hint as to when we can expect these beastly machines to arrive and will update the story as I find out more.
