Samsung launches metal-framed Galaxy A7 phablet

Samsung is on a mission in 2015 to rectify the flagging smartphone sales that have caused the electronics giant so many problems in the last 12 months. With the entire company’s earnings down on the back of a poor showing over the holiday season, Samsung is launching headlong into its new smartphone strategy announced last year and the first phone for 2015 to emerge from the South Korean firm is the metal-clad Galaxy A7 phablet.

The Galaxy A7 joins the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 that were launched towards the end of 2014 in a new model range that features high-end cameras and an all-aluminium chassis. The new A-series targets the mid-price segment of the smartphone market, leaving the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 to capture the high end of the market doing battle with the iPhones 6.

At just 6.3mm thick and 141g, the Android 4.4 powered Galaxy A7 undercuts the iPhone 6 Plus in both size and weight however, while they share the same display size of 5.5 inches, the more budget orientated Galaxy A7 can only manage a 720p resolution HD AMOLED display to the full HD unit found in Apple’s phablet.

The rest of the specs line up rather well for the Galaxy A7’s mid-tier billing with a choice of two eight core processors, either the Samsung made 32-bit Exynos 5430 or the64-bit Qualcomm made Snapdragon 615 for the LTE version. Both models will feature 2GB of RAM and 16GB of microSD card expandable storage as well as a 2 600mAh battery.

As mentioned above, Samsung is focusing on keeping the imaging quality of the A-range of smartphones high and as such there is a 13 megapixel rear-facing as well as a 5 megapixel front-facing camera in the Galaxy A7 which should satisfy the selfie crazed market.

“We strive to develop devices that appeal to a broad range of consumers and are ahead of the next big social trend,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communication at Samsung Electronics. “Combining both a stunning metallic design and a powerful performance, the Galaxy A7 is stylish while delivering the superior user experience.”
