Samsung’s Tizen smartphone finally sees the light of day

Samsung has been pushing it’s homegrown Tizen operating system as an alternative to Google’s Android for a while now and today the firm finally launched its first Tizen-powered smartphone.

The Samsung Z1 is now on sale in India for 5700 Indian rupees (just over R1 060) and offers a budget entry point for Tizen against the significant challenge that is Google’s Android One program, which also offers entry level smartphones in the country.

“The smartphone market in India is rapidly evolving, with many consumers using their device as their screen of choice for content including videos, television programs and video games, as well as a range of apps,” said Mr. Hyun Chil Hong, President and CEO, Samsung India Electronics. “We have customized the Samsung Z1 to meet these unique, entertainment-focused needs of local Indian consumers for a personal and reliable mobile experience.”

The Samsung Z1 is powered by a dual core 1.2GHz processor and 768MB of RAM with 4GB of storage which, thankfully can be increased with a microSD card. A 4 inch 480×800 PLS display, a 1 500mAh battery and a 3.1 megapixel camera round out the low end specs.

Samsung has already transitioned its Gear smartwatches away from Android to Tizen, citing battery and performance improvements. And the latest generation of Samsung’s SUHD TVs, which were announced at CES earlier this month, will all run on Tizen as well as Samsung looks to increase the install base to tempt developers across to the fledgling platform.
