[WATCH] SA’s top biohackers turn themselves into cyborgs

OK, so it’s a bit of a baity headline I admit, but it’s an old reference to once-famous UK professor who referred to himself as the world’s first cyborg when he implanted an RFID chip under his arm over ten years ago.

Headline explained, what’s the story today? It’s a reminder that you should watch South Africa’s best technology TV show on [ED] (DSTV 190) tonight at 7pm. It’s called EDGE, and we help to make it, and this is probably the best episode yet. The awesome Danine Naidoo is talking to local future gazers about what happened at CES last week and specifically what the types of tech on show mean for Africa.

Most exciting, however, is a chat with Jarryd Bekker of Gauteng’s Bushveld Labs on biohacking. Bekker is currently researching commercial applications and medical applications for chips that can talk to a smartphone over Bluetooth LE for storing information, monitoring vital statistics and controlling drug delivery from, say, a contraceptive implant.

Get the headline now?

Here’s a very quick teaser of tonight’s show. Catch the full thing at 7pm on DSTV channel 190. Be warned, though, it’s probably not for the super-squeamish.
