Internet.org makes its debut in Latin America

Yesterday Facebook yesterday expanded its Internet.org project to Colombia, making it the first country in Latin America where the service is available.

Mark Zuckerberg and Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos launched Internet.org at an event held in Bogotá, Colombia’s capital. Colombian customers on the international mobile network operator Tigo can now access a number of free services.

Through Internet.org, users get access to serives such as Instituto Colombiano para la Evaluación de la Educación, a Colombian education assessment tool, Agronet, an agriculture and rural development information resource, Wikipedia, UNICEF, Facebook Messenger, AccuWeather, MAMA and a few other international and local services. More services will be added at a later stage.

The Colombian launch also marked the first time Internet.org has included government services on its catalogue.

Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania are the only other countries where Internet.org is currently available.
