Apple’s former CEO plans to launch Android smartphone brand in Africa

Africa is one the fasting growing markets for mobile phones which is probably why former Apple CEO John Sculley’s company, Obi Mobiles, has set its sights on launching its smartphone brand in Africa.

Obi Mobiles, a Canadian venture run under a company co-owned by Sculley and Shane Maine, called Inflexionpoint, will bring its range of Android phones to Kenya in March. Obi Mobiles is targeting the country’s youth and tech-savvy consumers with a long-term goal of securing five percent market share by the end of 2015.

Obi Mobiles is well known for targeting lower-end markets around the world, it currently has a presence in India and the Middle-East and plans to move further into Africa, with a focus on the continent’s eastern most nations.

Obi Mobiles’ range of smartphones includes a familiar bunch of features for low-end mobile phones including Android 4.4, multi-core processors, large screens and dual SIM capabilities making them rather similar to the likes of the Steppa 2 and the Proline SP4 that were launched in South Africa recently.

“The African markets present a huge opportunity for new smartphone devices, with a growing population of technology- and fashion-savvy youth. Consumers today want the best feature-rich smartphone experience at desirable price points, without compromising on quality,” Sculley said in a statement.

Sculley was Apple’s CEO from 1983 to 1993. The 75-year-old entrepreneur previously headed Pepsi in the 70s and early 80s.
