Writers, editors: htxt.africa is recruiting!

Thanks for all the overwhelming interest in these positions. We’ve been inundated with CVs and are making our way through them as fast as possible. As of 6/2/2015, however, we are no longer able to accept new applications.

Calling all journalists, technologists, recent graduates, gadget lovers, gamers and more: htxt.africa needs you!

htxt.africa is entering its second year of operation and we’re enormously proud of what we’ve achieved so far. In the space of around 12 months, we’ve grown to South Africa’s fourth largest technology site and – in our humble opinion – by far the best with our unique mix of quick fire news and blogs, in-depth features and the continent’s most thorough reviews.

In addition to a daily blog and news portal, we also produce a monthly magazine and a quarterly series of books, which have established us as South Africa’s leading consumer technology publisher and the most informative voice on tech in Africa.

We aren’t stopping here. In the last month we’ve launched new channels dedicated to games, women, makers and startups, and we’ve begun working with the country’s most innovative and exciting TV channel to begin our campaign to dominate the small screen too.

We want to keep on growing, keep on expanding, cover ever more news and develop htxt.africa in every way over the course of 2015. And if you know tech – even some small part of what we do – we want your help.

We’re looking to expand our writing stable over the next few months with a mix of the country’s best freelance journalists and a greatly expanded in-house team too. In addition to that our parent company, Hypertext Media Communications, is also expanding its contract publishing department and we’ve got a load of vacancies that will need filling there soon too.

So here’s our quick quiz for you:

  • Are you a budding or already-established writer who understands technology and can make copy about complex but important issues engaging, entertaining and informative?
  • Do you have a nose for news and the ability to dig further and deeper into breaking stories faster than anyone else in the country?
  • Can you inject international tech stories with local relevance and bring new and interesting details out of the void that is the echo chamber of tech news?
  • Are you a technologist who wants to inform and be part of the debate around how new ideas are revolutionising business, education and entertainment in the African context?
  • Are you hungry to be part of a website that’s documenting the explosion of technology as a force for good not just in South Africa but across the continent?
  • Do you want to explore new ways of storytelling using video, images and data visualisations that can transform the way we create news and features in the most engaging and authoritative manner for the mobile generation?
  • Do you love what we do and want to be part of our journey to create Africa’s leading technology news portal?

If you feel as though any one of those applies to you, we want to hear from you. We’re looking to expand our team with freelance writers, guest commentators and in-house staff. We want established hacks and new talent that we can develop.

Officially, we’re looking to fill the following positions, but we don’t want to limit our options and we may combine or change roles or create new ones if we find the right people:

  • Managing editor htxt.africa & Tech Made Easy
  • Technical reviewer – Phones, computers and gadgets
  • Technical reporter/freelance contributors – makers.htxt.africa
  • News reporter – Startups and general tech
  • 2x paid journalism internships (6 months)

Pay in all cases is commensurate with experience, and freelance contributors will also be considered.

If you’re interested, send your CV and a sample of your writing to this email address, including a covering letter.

We’re expecting a lot of responses, so if you don’t hear from us within two weeks of submitting your CV please consider that your application has not been successful.
