Facebook launches “data-light app” for low connectivity areas in SA

Facebook is targeting mobile users with 2G handsets, and those living in areas where internet connectivity can be a bit of a struggle, with the launch of Facebook Lite, a data-light social networking app for Android.

The description on Google Play says Facebook Lite is only 252 KB in size, meaning it takes up little phone space and installs fairly quickly. It also only requires your phone to run Android 2.2 at the very least.

Unlike all of Facebook’s other apps that no longer allow users to send and receive inbox messages and now require you to do so via Messenger, Facebook Lite users can easily access their messages straight from within the app.

According to a report released by the GSMA late last year, the majority of mobile internet users in Africa will still be using 2G until 2020, which means the launch of Facebook Lite a very strategic move for the social networking company to tap into and capitalises.

Facebook Lite is currently available in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
