Google maps the great African indoors

If you hate having to hit up the information kiosk to find out where you’re going when walking through a mall or train station, you’ll be happy to know that Google’s got your back. Well, if you’re in very specific locations, that is.

Yes, everyone’s favourite search giant has added some South African locations to the list of places it knows intimately. Now, using Google Maps, you can make your way around various South African malls, train stations and even a university (WITS) without needing to consult with anyone, as Google Maps will not only tell you where you are, it will give you a very detailed layout and even provide directions to wherever you want to go within those locations.

Take that, human interaction or developing a sense of direction. Who needs you anyway?

According to the official Indoor Maps FAQ, these are the locations now covered by Google’s (nearly) all-encompassing knowingness:

  • Airports
    • Cape Town International
    • King Shaka International Airport
    • O. R. Tambo International Airport
  • Rail Stations
    • Centurion Station
    • Hatfield Station
    • Marlboro Station
    • Midrand Station
    • OR Tambo Airport Station
    • Park Station
    • Pretoria Station
    • Rhodesfield Station
    • Rosebank Station
    • Sandton Station
  • Shopping Centers
    • Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village
    • City View
    • Highveld Mall
    • Hyde Park Corner
    • Kolonnade Centre
    • The Constantia Village
    • Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
    • Walmer Park
    • Waterfall Mall
  • Casino/Hotels
    • Gold Reef Casino
    • Montecasino
    • Ridge Casino
    • Silverstar Casino
  • Event & Convention Halls
    • Coca Cola Dome
    • Durban Convention Centre
    • Heartfelt Arena
  • University
    • University of the Witwatersrand

Indoor maps aren’t new; in fact Google was working on the concept as far back as 2011, they’re just new to South Africa. Here’s the original promotion video The Goog put out about it:

While I really admire Google for doing some really cool stuff in the tech space, I despair for humanity when the mood takes me: I worry we’re raising a generation that won’t be able to find its backside without an app some day. Then again, I think every generation has expressed similar sentiments about the ones coming up behind them, so we’ll probably be fine.

Probably.

Anyway, the next time you’re at any of these landmarks, fire up Google Maps on your Android phone or tablet, check out Google’s hard work and feel free to let me know that my fears of dumbassery taking over are unfounded.
